Unearthly by Cynthia Hand

Genre: Fantasy YA
Publication Date: May 1, 2011
Format: Paperback
Source: Borrowed from Library
Rating: 4/5 Stars

Goodreads Summary:

In the beginning, there's a boy standing in the trees . . . .
Clara Gardner has recently learned that she's part angel. Having angel blood run through her veins not only makes her smarter, stronger, and faster than humans (a word, she realizes, that no longer applies to her), but it means she has a purpose, something she was put on this earth to do. Figuring out what that is, though, isn't easy.
Her visions of a raging forest fire and an alluring stranger lead her to a new school in a new town. When she meets Christian, who turns out to be the boy of her dreams (literally), everything seems to fall into place—and out of place at the same time. Because there's another guy, Tucker, who appeals to Clara's less angelic side.
As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she'd have to make—between honesty and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny?
Unearthly is a moving tale of love and fate, and the struggle between following the rules and following your heart.

My Opinion:
Part of the reason I picked this book is because of its rating on goodreads and its unique cover. It has a mysterious feel to it and somehow compelled me to take a look at the summary. I must say I was intrigued by what I saw.

The book starts with Clara's vision in a burning forest and there's a boy in it. Then the story continues with some introduction about Clara being a part angel and that she has received her purpose. It was as if she was supposed to save him but that was her only clue. So the whole family of 3 shifted to Wyoming, where they guessed the forest fire would occur. Hence, they were thrown into a new environment, a new home and a new school. I'll leave you to read the rest on your own. No spoilers from me.

What I like about the book is the way Cynthia Hand writes. Her characters were strong. Clara, Christian, Tucker, Wendy, Angela and even Jeffrey. Dialogues were natural. I particularly like the fact that Clara knew that she was part-angel from the start, rather than go one big round before she realizes it in the middle of the book. I get to follow how she learn to use her ability, how she hide it and how people react to it. However, there's quite little on the villain, who only seemed to appear nearer to the end of the book. Wow... So basically the book is about how Clara prepares herself for her purpose. There's still a lot of unsolved mysteries and the ending doesn't seem to really end. I guess that's why we have Hallowed!

By the way, I started out as Team Christian but as I go along, I switched to Team Tucker. Both guys are equally good, each with their own personality and goodness. It's amazing! If you have read the book, which team are you on?

Will definitely check out Hallowed and read for myself what happened after the vision!

4 stars for Unearthly.
