Review: Shadowspell (Faeriewalker #2) by Jenna Black

Genre: Fantasy YA
Publication Date: January 4, 2011
Format: Paperback
Source: Borrowed from Library
Rating: 4/5 Stars

Goodreads Summary:
On top of spending most of her time in a bunkerlike safe house and having her dates hijacked by a formidable Fae bodyguard, Faeriewalker Dana Hathaway is in for some more bad news: the Erlking and his pack of murderous minions known as the Wild Hunt have descended upon Avalon. With his homicidal appetite and immortal powers, the Erlking has long been the nightmare of the Fae realm.

A fragile treaty with the Faerie Queen, sealed with a mysterious spell, is the one thing that keeps him from hunting unchecked in Avalon, the only place on Earth where humans and Fae live together. Which means Dana’s in trouble, since it’s common knowledge that the Faerie Queen wants her – and her rare Faeriewalker powers – dead. The smoldering, sexy Erlking’s got his sights set on Dana, but does he only seek to kill her, or does he have something much darker in mind?

My Opinion
Shadowspell continues from where the story stopped in Glimmerglass where Dana was saved by Ethan after her Aunt Grace threw her into the waters with magical creatures wanting to trap her in it. Dana was thus placed under heavy protection in a safe house in a top secret location.

One day, when Dana and her parents were out for lunch at one of Avalon's best restaurants, there was a commotion outside, involving The Erklking and The Wild Hunt, the dangerous hunters and the nightmare of the Faerie. Way too dangerous. So Dana was placed under heavier protection--never to go out without 2 protectors instead of the usual 1.

Dana continued having martial arts lessons with Keane and sought his help to sneak her out of the safe house to Kimber's party where she witnessed Ethan dancing with a hot girl. And she's extremely pissed off. Of course, her ultimate protector, Finn, was not happy with this and went chasing after them.

So some time later, Dana, Finn and another protector were out shopping for groceries and met The Erlking, the leader of The Wild Hunt, face to face. What did he want from her? And why was he so interested in Dana, the Faeriewalker?

Fae politics never got more interesting than this! It's good to see that Dana is still a great character in Shadowspell but this time she's got more trouble on hand with all the sneaking around behind her father's and Finn's back. Oh ho! Finally something going on between Dana and Ethan! But then, nothing is ever going smoothly for the both of them. (I'll leave you to find out exactly why) And I'm extremely intrigued by The Erlking/Arawn, a new character in this book. As I've mentioned, he's feared by both Courts and obviously there's something more to him! Why was he feared? I'm eager to find out more! Then there's this little (or major) bargain going on between Dana and Arawn. I was shocked when I found out why he was interested in Dana. I'm wondering if you'd be shocked as well when you read it.

A word of caution before you read Shadowspell. It does contain minor (maybe something more than minor) sex scene and mention of it in this book so... you have been warned.

Overall, a lovely sequel for The Faeriewalker series.

4/5 stars for Shadowspell.
