{Review} Til Death by Kate Evangelista

Til Death by Kate Evangelista
(Fractured Souls #1)

Publication Date: 4 March 2014
Genre: YA Paranormal

Synopsis

Sixteen-year old Selena Fallon is a dreamer. Not a day-dreamer, but an I-see-the-future kind of dreamer. Normally this is not a problem as she has gotten pretty good at keeping her weird card hidden from everyone in her small town. Except from her best friend Kyle and her grandparents, of course. But when Selena dreams of her own rather bloody death, things get a little too freaky even for her.

Enter Dillan Sloan. Selena has seen the new guy in a different dream, and he is even more droolworthy in person. Beyond the piercing blue eyes and tousled dark hair, there is something else that draws her to him. Something…electric. Unfortunately, Dillan makes it more than clear that he does not feel the same. They just met, so why would he act like he hates her?

When Dillan and Selena are forced together one weekend to work on a school project, Selena prepares to be ignored as usual. But when she stumbles across a few undead in the backyard, Dillan comes to her rescue and reveals a whole lot more. Not only is he part of a society that hunts otherworldly creatures…she is too. And she is being targeted by a force bigger and darker than anything she ever imagined. Despite her death dream, Selena is not going to give up easy, especially when she discovers that Dillan might not actually hate her after all.

What I Felt
I really enjoyed reading Kate's books (Taste and Savor) and her writing style, so when the review opportunity arrived for her latest book Til Death, I couldn't resist it! Besides, will you just look at the gorgeous cover? That alone is enough to captivate me.

Selena has visions about the future and only a handful knew about this fact. She has seen this new guy Dillan Sloan in her dream but never knew that their touch would be electrifying--literally. What's worse was that he seemed to take a dislike to her. And what's with Selena having a vision about her own death? Will it actually happen?

Overall, Til Death is a smooth read, as expected of Kate's writing style, which I really like. The book was told from Selena and Dillan's POV, so it gives the reader a entire view of the situation at hand but still maintain that secret/mystery element since Dillan was kept in the dark on some important issues.

Even though the world building was somewhat lacking in the first half of the book, Kate has done a good job making up for it in the later part, especially about the Illumenari and the hierarchy within it. This is critical for the story development as Dillan was somewhat involved in this hierarchy. I have no complains about the characters except that there wasn't much questions raised by Selena's friends on her unique ability to see the future--they seemed to accept for what it was. Other than that, I would say that the characters are unique on their own and the supporting casts did their job in creating more depth to the story and to assist the main characters. I personally found Sebastian to be an interesting character, so keep a lookout for it!

The ending... was a cliffhanger! I would say the dangerous situation in Til Death was resolved and the next book will bring us another dangerous situation. I'm really looking forward to book 2 and reading more about Selena and Dillan.
