{Review} Touching Evil by Amber Garr

Touching Evil
Author: Amber Garr
Series: Leila Marx #1
Published November 5th 2012
Genre: Urban Fantasy (Adult)
Source: From author in exchange for honest review
Buy: Amazon, Kindle, Book Depository, Kobobooks
With one touch, Leila can see it all.

Leila Marx is trying to put her life back together after her fiancĂ© is murdered. When Detective Garrick Pearson enlists her help with a difficult case, she is thankful for the distraction and the opportunity to use her talents as a touch clairvoyant. Leila and Garrick delve into the mystery behind a series of missing teenage girls and mummified corpses while discovering their own growing attraction to each other.

Conner Hoffman is an intriguing lawyer and striking half-demon who enters Leila’s life unexpectedly. Although her visions are terrifying, she is fascinated by his charm and his legacy. When it becomes evident that the murders are linked to a paranormal event, Conner introduces Leila to a world unbeknownst to ordinary society. She suddenly finds herself immersed in supernatural politics, sorcery, and danger as she becomes the killer’s next target.

Staying alive will mean relying on friends, accepting the unbelievable, and trusting in her heart again.
RATING: 4 out of 5 Stars

It was tough for Leila, being able to foresee her fiance's murder but not able to stop it in time. She's now helping the police with her powers in the investigation process and she has no idea what she was getting into and what she would encounter...

I find myself liking Leila as the story progresses. She's tough and just keeps going, using her ability to help solve difficult cases for Garrick. I'm also impressed with how Amber includes many different types of paranormal creatures in Touching Evil. They make great supporting characters! I appreciate the witty humor made in the story. That made the whole story enjoyable, besides the wonderful characters.

By the way, did I mention that I'm torn between Garrick and Connor? If I haven't, then I'm saying it now! I'm certainly looking forward to the rest of the series--to more Garrick and Connor!

Author Interview: Amber Garr - The Syrenka Series

I'm pleased to welcome Ms Amber Garr, author of The Syrenka Series, to my blog today for an interview! If you haven't read my reviews, here they are: #1 Promises, #2 Betrayal  and #3 Arise! Let's welcome Amber!

Hi Amber, welcome to Michelle Chew Writes today! Can you tell us a little bit about The Syrenka Series?
Thanks for having me! The Syrenka Series focuses on a hidden society of mermaids, selkies, and water sprites.  At the center of the story is Eviana, a teenage mermaid being forced into clan politics and responsibilities before she’s had much of a chance to grow up.  There’s an arranged marriage, an opportunity for her to run away, and a battle to protect humans that she must deal with.  Throughout the series you will see her mature, accept some of her responsibilities, and become the leader her parent’s always envisioned.  Of course there is also a little bit of a love triangle (square?) that resolves itself by the end of Arise.

Where did you get the inspiration to write the series?
The first chapter of Promises was originally a short story.  I enjoyed the selkie folklore and thought it might be interesting to write a “forbidden” love between a selkie and a mermaid.  But once I had that story written, the rest of it filled my head and one short story turned into an entire trilogy!

Were there any challenges you faced while writing the series?
I wanted to make sure that the series deserved three books and that the overarching plot lines were interesting, relevant, and would bring the readers back for more.  I would imagine that’s always a challenge!  I wrote Promises and Betrayal in about one month each (first draft), but Arise took a little more time because I had to focus on writing my dissertation.  So finding the time to write was a bit tough throughout the series, but a welcomed relief when I could immerse myself.  I also want to add that one of the scariest aspects was deciding to actually publish it!  What if no one bought it? What if all the reviews were bad?  It was such an experiment in learning how well I could really handle it all.  But so far, I have to say that I’m very glad I did it.

Of the many characters in your series, who are your favorite characters? Why?
I enjoyed writing Eviana (the main character) because I liked watching her mature and come into her own person.  I’d also have to say that I love Abhainn (the water sprite).  He wasn’t supposed to be a regular, but he was just too cool not to include in Eviana’s story.  Plus, I love his accent!

Do you work with an outline, or just write?
I have to have the major scenes outlined.  It’s not a perfectly planned outline, but I’m one of those people that have to write everything down (even in my day job).  Once the story is outlined, I just sit down and write!

Where is your favorite writing spot?
Most of the books have been written at my kitchen table. It keeps me in the same area as my husband (by the TV) so I don’t feel like I’m totally ignoring him every night!

What do you do when you are not writing?
Promoting, marketing, checking my sales records obsessively! At least that’s what it feels like some days. But really, I teach (and dance) at a local dance studio, co-chair a statewide youth writers program, and read at least a chapter every night. Oh, and watch True Blood!

Now that The Syrenka Series has been completed, will there be any upcoming projects that you can share with us?
Yes!  I am working on final edits (hopefully) of the first book I wrote, Touching Evil, so that I can consider publishing that.  I also have an adult novel in the works that I’d like to come back to at some point. And just recently, I started a new YA book that would be a standalone and doesn’t involve mermaids, vampires, or werewolves but still has a paranormal twist!  If only I could find more time in the day.

Thanks Amber for stopping by my blog today. If you haven't read The Syrenka Series, you totally should and you can get them here:

Rating: 4/5 Stars

Goodreads Summary:
With power comes the responsibility to accept its consequences.

After the betrayal of those closest to her, Eviana Dumahl struggles to cope with her new reality. Kidnapped, broken, and confused, she is forced to engage in a war that will alter merfolk politics forever. With her estranged father leading the charge, Eviana has no choice but to stand by his side. Her continued existence hinges on the acceptance of the power growing inside her, even when that means embracing the family’s dark lineage.

Kain Matthew will sacrifice the world for Eviana. And he is not alone. As time runs out, her friends fight to save her life and theirs. An unlikely alliance gives them the edge they need to take a stand, although it keeps Eviana’s heart trapped in the past. A new discovery explains some of her previous mistakes, but it may not be enough to stop her father’s plans. Merfolk, selkies, and water sprites work together to save their kind, only in this final battle, not everyone will survive.

In the striking series conclusion, Eviana will learn the true meaning of power, sacrifice, and love.

My Opinion
If you have been following my Teaser Tuesday, one of it was from Arise (see the post here). That is the first few lines for book 3 of The Syrenka Series. Yes, Eviana was captured in Book 2 and it left me worrying for her and wondering how she would be getting out of that complicated situation. Of course her friends would be trying to save her but will they be successful?

The Syrenka Series is a captivating series filled with mermaids, selkies and water sprites. You'll keep wanting to read more once you start with the series. Arise does not disappoint and delivers a satisfying conclusion to the whole series. The manipulation of emotions in Arise was great and I really fell for it the same way that Eviana did, so it really came as a surprise when it was revealed. Graham was still amusing to read with all his endearments for Eviana. It's also good to see that Brendon's back, though for some unfortunate reasons (Eviana being kidnapped). I can't say much without divulging the plot but if you have read the book (or my review), you would have seen three names: Brendon (her childhood sweetheart), Kain (her appointed fiancee) and Graham (the powerful Council member). Who will Eviana end up with? Read Arise to find out.

Quotes:

  • "All right. But I was simply going to say that I missed so much of your life and I want to know more about you."
"So you kidnap me? Did you ever consider a phone call or an email?"

  • "You should sit down," Daniel said.
    "I'm fine."
"You're not. You were skewered. By a sword." He stepped in front of me. "Stop trying to pretend it doesn't hurt."
    "I'm not."
He huffed. "I don't get that macho thing you all do. Why can't you just admit when you need help?"
    "I'm fine," I said a little louder.
    "Whatever. Be in pain."

  • Lucian interrupted and slammed his hand against the table. "Eviana, please put the chair down and have a seat so I can explain."
"Or you can sit right here," Graham said while patting his lap.

{ebook Review} Betrayal (The Syrenka Series #2) by Amber Garr

Betrayal by Amber Garr

ebook

Genre: Fantasy

Rating: 5/5 Stars

Goodreads Summary:
Life as a mermaid can be suffocating.

Eviana Dumahl has returned home as a clan leader, an orphan, and a heartbroken teenage girl. Her parents are dead and her boyfriend, Brendan, has decided that he needs some time away. While battling her inner turmoil, Eviana is forced into the war that Lucian Sutherland has incited amongst her own kind. With the help of Kain, her friend and formally betrothed, the two work together to prove that they deserve their birthrights as young merfolk leaders.

When the Council requests a demonstration of Eviana’s mermaid powers, she finds herself with an opportunity to win back Brendan’s heart. But her orders to train with a repulsive merman and the presence of an attractive new suitor challenges Eviana to embrace her leadership and resist temptation. Lucian is after her, and no one seems to understand why. Loyalties are tested as the casualties increase, showing Eviana that sometimes it is impossible to delineate between friends and enemies.

Betrayal is the second book of The Syrenka Series trilogy following Eviana and her friends as they navigate through the challenges of existing in a secret world.

My Opinion
I'm really excited to be reading Betrayal after I finished reading Promises (Book 1) because I really want to find out more about Eviana, especially when she just assumed the position of the Clan Leader. I immediately linked Brendon to the title of the second book, so I sort of guessed what will be happening. Nevertheless, that did not deter me from reading the book. The most important thing is that there is a new character (or many) in book 2 and that brought some new surprises which spice up the book a lot! *squee* Welcome the charming Graham! *swoons* I love reading the interaction between Eviana and Graham! He's so totally hot!

I still enjoy reading about Eviana and Kain. We get to know about Eviana's cousin, Palmer, who is her protector and instructor for martial arts. The danger is still lurking around and Eviana has to do all she can to prepare herself. She was summoned before the Council because they learned about her newfound ability. Decisions were made and then there were attacks... The sad part? Lots of people were injured... *sniff*

There's actions throughout the whole book so you'll be thoroughly entertained. The attacks keep coming and Eviaina and group kept defending and training. Who will win ultimately? When I got to the end, I was totally shocked! I never imagined that things will turn out to be that way! It's a pleasant surprise. Betrayal is so read-worthy. If you haven't read the series, be sure to start with Promises! I recommend it everyone who love to read about powerful kick-ass heroine.

Quotes:

  • “Remember your training is never over, Eviana.” He threw the pebble at me again and I swatted it away. Tipping an invisible hat in my direction, Palmer turned around and jogged off towards the other guys training further down the beach.
“Jerk,” I muttered under my breath. Kain laughed.
    “That’s pretty tame of you.”
“Yeah, well…see how grown up I am now? I didn’t bother to call him one nasty name that came to mind.”
He smiled at me. “I’m impressed.”

  • “Hey!” Kain yelled. “Don’t be jealous. We can’t all be perfect.” I wanted to punch him again, but I’d already been childish enough for the day.
“Well, I have better mind control,” I blurted. So much for maturity.

  • Either he wasn’t ready, or I was getting better, but after only a few blocked punches I had the clear shot to the back of his legs. He went down with a bang and I landed on top of him to attempt a choke hold. It was a little too easy.
“Why aren’t you fighting back?” I was straddled over his waist and leaning close enough to smell the alcohol on his breath. Instead of pushing me off, he smiled.
    “I am. I’m resisting temptation.”

{eBook Review} Promises (The Syrenka Series #1) by Amber Garr

Promises by Amber Garr
Series: The Syrenka Series #1
Kindle Edition
Published (first published December 7th 2011)

Genre: Fantasy
Source: Received from author in exchange for honest review
Rating: 4.5/5 Stars

Buy: Kindle

Goodreads Summary:

Sometimes following your heart can end up destroying the ones you love.

When seventeen-year-old Eviana Dumahl is faced with the responsibility of an arranged marriage and clan leadership, she is forced to choose between the life required of a mermaid and one of a teenage girl simply infatuated with the wrong guy. Kain, her devoted fiancĂ© would make a wonderful husband except that she’s been in love with Brendan, a shape-shifting selkie, ever since they were kids. Choosing to abandon her family, her clan, and her life with Kain will have dire consequences far beyond anything she could have imagined.

A war is brewing amongst the clans and Eviana unwittingly becomes a pawn in the intricate schemes of a twisted mastermind. With Brendan’s life on the line, she has no choice but to involve those who she once considered friends. Amidst encountering senseless tragedies and immense loss, Eviana discovers that she is more valuable as a clan leader than anyone ever suspected. Her survival is not only dependent upon the loyalty of her friends, but also on her acceptance of a life that she had so adamantly tried to escape.

Promises is the first book of The Syrenka Series trilogy following Eviana and her friends through the perils of growing up in a discrete world that inherently threatens human society.

My Opinion:
Promises is about Eviana, a mermaid, who falls in love with a Selkie, Brandon, while she was in an arranged marriage with a fellow merman, Kain. She gave up everything to be with the love of her life, and that was when the danger starts. What kind of danger? You'll have to read Promises to find out. I promise you that there's lots of plot twists (from the middle of the book onwards) and dangers in there so it's entertaining!

I'm glad I got a chance to read Promise because it is so much better than what I have expected. What a pleasant surprise! This is my first mermaid/selkie book and I must say I totally enjoy the world the author has painted in the book and her style of writing pushes me to keep turning my pages. I love her lovely description of the scenery. Beautiful! I also love the characters! They seem real. The characters' feelings really poured out and reached me, especially during the dangerous moments. When I finished the book, I craved for more! There's so much going on that kept my interest going throughout the whole book. Brilliant!

Team Brendon or Team Kain? I really wish I can smack Brendon on the head. Seriously? But I'm going to stick with him for now. ;)

Quotes:
  • I felt like such a child, but I told him anyway. “I hate to fly.”
He laughed and wrapped his arm around my shoulder. “Well, you haven’t flown with me yet.”

  • “You okay?” His voice was groggy with sleep and I had to close my eyes when he rolled onto his back and stretched out in front of me. Stop looking. Stop looking. Stop looking. I chastised myself. The tan, muscled chest kept drawing me in and when I tried to move away, I fell with a thump to the floor.

  • “Yeah.” I had to clear my throat to get more words out. “But it’s not what you think. We have an arrangement. I mean, we’re not sleeping together. Well, we are, but it’s not like that. We sleep in clothes.” Oh just kill me now.
