Goodreads Summary:
At Barinkoff Academy, there's only one rule: no students on campus after curfew. Phoenix McKay soon finds out why when she is left behind at sunset. A group calling themselves night students threaten to taste her flesh until she is saved by a mysterious, alluring boy. With his pale skin, dark eyes, and mesmerizing voice, Demitri is both irresistible and impenetrable. He warns her to stay away from his dangerous world of flesh eaters. Unfortunately, the gorgeous and playful Luka has other plans.

When Phoenix is caught between her physical and her emotional attraction, she becomes the keeper of a deadly secret that will rock the foundations of an ancient civilization living beneath Barinkoff Academy. Phoenix doesn’t realize until it is too late that the closer she gets to both Demitri and Luka the more she is plunging them all into a centuries old feud.

My Opinion
I've totally enjoyed how Kate has started off with Taste and how it moved on from there. It's totally engaging and mysterious at the same time. This urged me to turn the pages and to find out more.

Taste started with Phoenix, a day student at Barinkoff, awakened by the chime of the bell signalling the end of the day school and all students were not to remain in school or face expulsion. She tried to leave the school and for some reason, she couldn't. That was when she saw some night students and decided to ask them for help to leave the school premises. That's when danger struck. There's talk about tasting her flesh and it left Phoenix confused. That's when a guy called Demitri swooped in to save her. *drools* He did get her out of the school and warned her not to stay late in school. Now, Phoenix was intrigued by those Night students. Who were they and why were they kept a secret from the Day students? She needed to find out why and little did she know that she's putting herself in danger.

The pacing of the whole story is just right, starting with a little bit of suspense and then the story slowly unraveled to show us what exactly is the secret about the Night Students. We get to know who Demitri exactly was and how important he was to his people. And there's another guy of interest--Luka! He could actually force Demitri to kneel before him. Who exactly was he? And why was he interested in Phoenix? You have to read Taste to find out all these! Love the romantic bits within the story and how torn she was between the two guys. Both guys are really swoon-worthy. *swoons* It's difficult even for me to pick sides and in the end I've decided to keep them both. *cackle* Perhaps Demitri won a little by his actions towards the last quarter of the book which had me teary-eyed. No girl can say no to him after reading that! (Am I the only one who nearly cried after reading the last quarter?) And Phoenix's sense of loss when she was returned to the Day school... *cries more* Touching!

I'm really glad I got the chance to read Taste and I'll gladly recommend it to all who loves paranormal read. You have to try it!

Quotes

  • "Who are you?" I blurted out. "I mean, you're too good looking to be human."
"Not as naive as I thought," he said, more to himself.
    "Spare me the insult."
"Good looking, huh?" His lips curled upward.
A flush burned its way across my face. "Forget I said anything."
  • The girl named Calixta glared at him. "Tell me what Demitri has to do with that?"
I put my hands on my hips and said, "Excuse me, I have a name."
"Please, no violence around the experiments," Dray pleaded.
  • "I knew you wouldn't be able to resist coming to me. Come, give us a kiss."
I put my hands up. "Not when Demitri's behind those doors."
"So you're saying if Demitri wasn't in my study right now you'd kiss me?"
    "Stop being a jerk, Luka."
